- Why Your Skin Still Feels Dry
Dry skin is not just about a lack of water. The real issue is often a weak lipid barrier, which makes it easy for moisture to escape.
People with dry skin are often born with a weaker skin barrier, so their skin loses hydration more quickly. That is why using only a moisturizer may not be enough. You also need to improve the balance of moisture, lipids, and the skin’s natural microbiome.
Healthy skin needs these 3 things:
A strong lipid barrier
Enough moisture
A healthy skin microbiome
When one of these is out of balance, skin can become dry, rough, dull, and more sensitive. In people with naturally dry skin, the amount of lipids in the skin is lower, so irritation and skin trouble happen more easily.
The lipid barrier works like “mortar” between the skin’s “bricks.” It protects the outer layer of your skin, keeps moisture inside, and helps defend against UV rays, weather changes, and pollution.
When this barrier becomes weak, skin loses water, feels tight and flaky, and fine dry lines become more visible. It can also make the skin age faster.
Common causes include aging and cold, dry seasons. For dry skin, choose skincare with plant oils, ceramides, and fatty acids to protect and nourish the skin.
