【Visakha Bucha Day】
Next Sunday marks the full moon of the 6th lunar month
The day the Buddha was born
The day he attained enlightenment
And the day he passed into Nirvana.
Three sacred events overlapping on one profound day.
In Thailand, this is a national holiday 'Buddha Day'
We, too,
decorat our space with beautiful flowers,
Inspired by 「Lumbini」 the garden where the Buddha was born,
And offere our hearts to this miraculous day.
“The purpose of life.”
Why were we born?
Why must we keep on living?
What is the meaning behind the work we do?
The Buddha was not a god, nor a saint
But a human being,
Just like us,
Who struggled and suffered.
That is why his words, his teachings,
Resonate within us
Like the voice of our own hearts.
“Each of us was born to fulfill a noble purpose.”
“We carry a mission that only we, as individuals, can carry out.”
When he said “we,”
He didn’t mean all living things.
He meant us 「humans.」
To be born as a human being
Is not something ordinary
It is rare.
It is precious.
天井天下”Tenjo Tenka”
Above and beneath the heavens
(the universe)
唯我独尊”Yuina dokuson”
The only noble purpose that only we have
When I ask myself what my life’s purpose is,
There may be no clear answer.
It may be something beyond what words can explain.
But if I ask my body
There’s a feeling, a knowing,
That begins to surface.
“To feel joy.”
When I truly feel joy,
I can sense my life energy awakening, expanding.
And that joy
Is never something born from within me alone.
It always, always involves others.
It is about connection.
To cherish that connection.
To fulfill our part in that web of life,
To rejoice in it,
To be grateful for the encounters we are gifted.
Maybe this
This is what our work truly is.
These were the thoughts that came to me
As I quietly honored Buddha’s birth day.
